I guess I don't understand Harris' point. Is he emphasizing the extraordinary event that is taking place on any ordinary Sunday morning in corporate worship, and thus encouraging people to realize what is going and avail themselves to it? Or is he saying that people should be more involved in church activities?
If he is making the former point, I agree. Worship is the pinnacle of a Christians week (whether they know it or not) and should be prepared for and cherished. However, if he is making the latter point (i.e. more church involvement) I don't know if that is such a good thing. I think when the Lord's Day is emphasized and people avail themselves to the greatness of public worship, it should free them from feeling like they have to do other church activities during the week. They should feel free to love their neighbor and do God honoring work for 6 days and then rest by worshiping on the 7th.
At the end of the day, I am a fan of less church activities, stronger sense of corporate worship on Sunday, and having the Christian Life flow out of and flow towards Sunday. If that's what Harris is saying, I like it.
yeah, I think he's talking about "whenever you meet together" without addressing the "wheres and whens" and how often.
I agree that some folks are over-involved at church. It's the church leader's job to encourage this attitude/mindset when we do meet, but it's a burden to me that corporate gatherings so often fall short of that.
